Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

There Has to be More:

Many incoming freshmen enter college just hoping they will choose to do the right things.  Kevin Prather, from the University of Texas, San Antonio tells the story of a young man who entered college and discovered what it truly meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah* is a young Christian from Austin. This was his freshman year. One of our older students, Eric*, ran into him one day early in the semester and discovered Isaiah played the guitar and they had some commonalities. Isaiah was not plugged into any Christian organization or any local church. He would go home to Austin often on weekends or if in town, spend most of his time with his girlfriend.

Eric brought him to the BSM and he connected with our worship team, sometimes helping to lead, other times simply being present. The first semester we saw him come and go-he enjoyed BSM but something wasn’t clicking for him. Isaiah had not been discipled (and did not have many strong older Christian male role models in his life) and had compromised in the area of his relationship with his girlfriend. He knew something was not right and had told her about Christ but she stated emphatically she did not believe and would not believe. He came to me one night in the Spring semester after a worship service and asked what he should do about his girlfriend. I went over the Gospel with Isaiah again and he affirmed that he trusted solely in Christ and wanted to follow Him-he also admitted he did not know what the Bible had to say about moral purity and we talked at length about him honoring God with his body, his girlfriend, his dating life-with all of his life. It was a long “father/son” type of conversation. Isaiah left that meeting determined to tell his girlfriend that he cared for her but had dishonored her and God with some of the things they had done and wanted her to know that he had surrendered everything in life he understood, to Christ.  Isaiah had a breakthrough moment that night and he continued to come to worship and started meeting with me and some other young men during the week. He ended up going on our mission trip-a young man now on fire for Christ and eager to share with others.

Isaiah is a powerful story in that he represents so many of our young people who graduate from High School, leave the church and go off to college: He showed up just hoping he’d do the right things without any real clear sense of things or any real grounding in his walk with Christ. He knew there had to be more than just being a good person and going to church, but he didn’t know what that ‘something’ was. In BSM he discovered discipleship, time alone with God, more of the Lordship of Christ and what it means to be a disciple continually on mission. Isaiah is a profound story of growth in Christ.

Favorite Scripture Verse… Isa 26:3The kindest thing that someone has ever done for me was…leave work, come
to my house and change the flat tire on my big old car!
The weirdest thing I have ever eaten was… rabbit, fried bees, and snails (all in the same meal!)
Who has been the greatest influence on your Christian life and why? When I was in high school there was a group of women from our church who invested heavily in my spiritual and emotional growth. They are women of faith I look up to greatly still to this day.
My hidden talent is…photography- one friend says I have the gift of taking great self-portraits!
I am passionate about…everyone being accepted into the family- discrimination in any form can really get me going.
If I did not have to work, I would…work in the garden, lay in a hammock, and read great books
When/how did you feel called to ministry? When I was exploring ministry as a calling I received a phone call asking me to come and work with the BSM as an intern. Those 10 months of experience and exploration confirmed that God was calling me to full time ministry.
I am really good at…creative tasks.
When asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I always said…a teacher.

  • For wisdom and clarity to lead the BSM’s in Dallas and Collin County
forward in a missional strategy to reach every college student in our
    area.
  • I have been praying for Gayatri for this whole year. She is a graduate
international student and each time we’ve met we’ve talked deeply about
spiritual issues. She comes from a Hindu religious background and has not
    yet decided to follow Jesus.

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

Incoming Freshmen 2011:

The school year has wrapped up and high school seniors are preparing to head to college.  We (Texas Baptist Student Ministry – BSM) believe the local church plays an important role in the lives of incoming freshmen in college.  They have possibly invested the last 18 years in the lives of graduates and we desire to continue to invest in these students while they are away at college.

According to a Lifeway study, 70% of students leave church after heading off to college.  This is a startling statistic.  Pew research found only 55% of protestant evangelicals remain active in church from the moment they head to college and well into their twenty’s.  Yet, in a recent survey conducted of Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) graduates, 80% of these students are still active in their local church.

These high school graduates are at a crossroads.  Will they continue growing in their relationship with the Lord or will they choose to walk away?  Join with us in praying for the Incoming Freshmen of 2011.

Favorite Scripture Verse… Romans 5:6-11
The kindest thing that someone has ever done for me was…Jesus laid down His life for me when I deserved nothing but God’s wrath
The weirdest thing I have ever eaten was… Cottage cheese/chocolate protein powder “pudding” -not so good
Who has been the greatest influence on your Christian life and why? My father. He was a man of humility, quiet service and great faith.
My hidden talent is… Doing voices-not imitations, originals. Let’s just stop there :)
I am passionate about… Jesus, my family, the ministry I am called to, reading, writing, fitness and my Spurs
If I did not have to work, I would… Travel around the world. Specifically I’ve always wanted to take my family to Japan, China, and the UK to minister for a period of time. That may sound like work, so if strictly leisure-go to the mountains with the family and relax
When/how did you feel called to ministry? Age 23. I had this sense He wanted me to serve as a minister since I was a child. I held back that portion of my life (vocation) for some time-rather stubborn. He turned my greatest fear into my greatest joy however!
When asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I always said… As a five year old I wanted to be a garbage man. My mother was a bit concerned about that. I thought riding on the back of those trucks was about the coolest thing ever. I graduated from that to wanting to play for the Cowboys, then the Spurs, then I wanted to be a writer. The astronaut bug never bit me.

New Idea

If you have not noticed, Texas is a big place! We have over 100 BSM staff members that span from El Paso to McAllen and everything in between. Every campus in the state of Texas has a unique ministry all its own and are constantly developing and implementing new ides. In an attempt to connect BSM staff from around the state we are beginning a new bi-weekly publication called “BSM Connect.”

The goal of BSM Connect is to:

  1. Connect you all with each other
  2. Facilitate the sharing of ideas
  3. Create consistent communication

BSM connect will consist of 4 parts: A Campus Profile, a New Idea based on one of our 5 BSM goals (Leadership, Missions, Evangelism, Church-Life, and Discipleship), Breaking News, and a word from a State Staff member.

You are a vital part of this newsletter. You are engaging with students daily, investing time and energy in creating new ways to cultivate these 5 areas of BSM, and have a lot to offer other BSM staff in Texas.

What would you like to see in this “New Idea” section? We would love to hear your ideas and thoughts. Email us.

From the pen of……Bruce McGowan

By far the process of finding and developing leaders is one of the most important ministries of a BSM Director and staff! One can have fair attendance at meetings yet never begin to make “Kingdom” advances on the campus without a strong base of student leaders. I am captured by Jesus statement on leadership in Matthew 9: 37,38, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” So, first we pray: for God to send workers into his harvest. This implies you are involved in the Harvest. Why would God send workers (leaders) if the heartbeat of your ministry is not for the lost?

Second, we provide an environment conducive to growth. Three words capture how to create this environment: Intentional, personal, steady. What is your intentional plan for a student as they come to BSM? Hopefully to become a fully devoted follower of Jesus! Paul stated it well in Colossians 1: 27- 29, “We preach Christ…… We teach in a spirit of profound common sense so that we can bring each person to maturity. To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less. That’s what I’m working so hard at day after day, year after year, doing my best with the energy God so generously gives me.” Do you meet with your leadership personally with intentions to challenge them to grow spiritually? No way to avoid personal development of your leadership. Steady, week after week with consistency you labor to develop leaders. Soon they begin to develop other leaders. Soon, students want to participate in your “growing ministry”!

Campus Spotlight

Campus: Texas A&M, Kingsville
Staff: Mike Cervantes, director

Mike Cervantes, director at TAMU, Kingsville speaks of the excitement building on their campus because of ‘Freshman Survival Weekend’. What started as a way to connect students with other students turned into a life changing event.

Starting this past summer Mike and his wife Michelle began recruiting Freshmen at orientation to participate in a Freshman Survival Weekend. As a result of close communication with Student Activities on their campus Mike and Michelle were able to put together a Survival Weekend involving faculty chairs, the university Police Department, and students. It became an event that not only fed students spiritually but also provided information on how to survive academically and stay safe while in college.

Mike saw 60 different freshmen participate throughout the whole weekend and as a result 30 of those freshmen are now involved in BSM. Not only are these freshmen now involved but also the majority of these students do not know Christ as their Savior, yet. Following the Survival Weekend one of the freshmen that attended the weekend walked into the BSM the following Wednesday and chose to place her life in the hands of Jesus Christ.
