State Lead Team Summit

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

The TxBSM Lead Team Summit was wonderful!  Students were led to follow Jesus more closely through an in depth study of Philemon, challenged to lead out in evangelism on their campus, and they put into practice their leadership skills to plan this years ABIDE Prayer Retreat.

Thank you for praying for our time together.  Continue to pray for these students as they become more like Christ and lead on their campuses.

Pausing & Praying with you,
Texas Baptist Student Ministry

A “Night of Decadence” & Christ

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

At Rice there is a campus-wide party on October 26th. This party is unlike any party I [director, Andy Dennis] have ever seen and the name of the party truly fits what happens; this annual party is called “Night of Decadence.” During the party the BSM rents golf carts and offers to give students a ride back to their dorms because they are too intoxicated. The BSM also makes pancakes right by the exit in order to start conversations with students.

During this party I was able to talk with a student named David*. After talking with him for sometime, and realizing that trying to have a deep conversation about Christ wasn’t going to work, I invited him to come to the free lunch the following Wednesday. Sure enough, as Wednesday rolled around, David came and we set a time on Friday to meet up and talk. When we met on Friday, we started talking about God and what David’s beliefs were about God. We talked for 2 1/2 hours about the Lord and David told me he did not believe in God because of all of the evil and suffering in the world. Although he does not believe in God yet, he and I have been meeting weekly to continue our discussion about God and about if He can exist and be good even though there is evil in the world. Continue to pray that God opens David’s heart and mind to come to know Him!

Number of students on our campus: 3893 Undergrad; 2638 Grad/PhD

We have 1288 international students on our campus representing 86 countries/regions.
Our campus is unique because:  Our campus dorms (called “colleges”) are the center for all social interaction and relationships (no frats or sororities). They are based on the British College system (think “Harry Potter” & the different houses).
One of the best ways we have found to connect with new students is: Eating meals with them.  People are busy, but everybody’s gotta eat.
God is at work on our campus: In the lives of many athletes!  9 of 11 girls on the Women’s Basketball team are involved in Bible study.

Our campus mascot is: The Owls! (wise pet of the goddess Athena!)

Ways to Pray…

  • For the staff: That we would be continually refreshed by God in the midst of an ongoing intellectual, moral, & spiritual darkness.
  • For BSM leadership: They would make deep connections and not be intimidated to share their faith with those who would object on intellectual grounds.
  • For our campus: God would remove barriers (intellectual, social, moral) & create a spiritual hunger in the lives of students to seek/need Him.
  • Pray for David to submit His life to Jesus Christ.

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

Forming a missional community in the Jester dorm has been an experience that perfectly fits UT’s atmosphere. It has been fun, unpredictable, rewarding, and, at times, difficult. Before Jessica, Hayden, and I [Mayzie; students at UT]could even get our bearings on what “missional community” would look like for Jester, we met V and Z. They were two nonbelievers holding nothing short of animosity for Christianity. However, God pursued them relentlessly and now they are children of the Father! V and Z possess active, vibrant, REAL faiths that are blessings to see grow and reach toward the lost. God has given us sweet friendships with believers and nonbelievers alike, and each are people we can genuinely say we love and desire to see grow closer to Jesus. Even when we are tired, stressed, or don’t feel like ministering to anyone, God is faithful to make himself known. We serve a big God, and His harvest is ready to be taken up!

Luke 10:2- “And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Pitching Tents & Starting Fires

November 21, 2013

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

Every year we [the University of Texas, Tyler BSM] take students on the Fall Campout. This year 42 students pitched tents, cooked over the fire, played games to get to know each other, and grew in their walk with God. This was by far the largest group we’ve taken on the fall campout. As we walked through the parable of the Prodigal Son, shared our testimonies, and pulled away from everyone for a time of solitude, we connected with the Lord and with each other at a deep level.

We continue to have the Fall Campout because of its affect on our community. At the end of the year we try to survey as many new students as possible to find out when they felt like part of the community and not just someone who shows up. If they went on the Fall Campout, that’s what they always say.

My [Joe Osteen, director] favorite moment of the semester so far came on Friday night at the campout. We had talked through the younger brother’s story in the parable of the Prodigal Son and divided up into small groups to share our stories with each other. As students shared in groups about where they are at in their spiritual journey I walked around cleaning up some things and listening. What an encouragement it was to know that there were students at the campout who don’t know Christ that were hearing these students share honestly about where they’ve been, what God’s doing in their lives, their past and current struggles. The power of God’s people engaging in loving, honest community with each other is always amazing to me.

BSM at UTSA is going through a challenging time of ‘rebooting’ the work on the campus.  Prayers are greatly appreciated and needed as Kevin has returned to the campus for that purpose. There are several important and strategic things he is praying for. Please join him in praying for the following:

  1. Males. BSM at UTSA has a desperate need for males, specifically male leaders.  BSM at UTSA is predominantly female as is the leadership.
  2. Extroverts. BSM at UTSA is almost entirely comprised of high introverts.  If BSM is to effectively engage the campus, there is a need for extroverted students who simply love meeting and engaging new people.
  3. Students with the primary spiritual gifts of faith, evangelism and leadership.

In addition, please pray for Kevin. Please pray for:

  1. Wisdom
  2. Patience
  3. Volunteer workers to assist him in engaging the campus and helping existing leaders and core students grow.

There are great possibilities with students BSM has engaged this semester. Please pray for the following students who, if they will more deeply connect with BSM, help BSM at UTSA become a more balanced, missional community:

  • Chelsea, Bridget, “Biz”—(Pray for his salvation above all. He is an extrovert and has tremendous potential as a leader), Amy, Brionte, Kevin, Cody, Nicholas

In every ministry context Kevin has served over the past 27.5 years (youth minister, church planter, pastor, BSM), he has been called to either start something new, or re-start something or lead something that has been in a downward spiral. This challenge is not new for him, and he has seen how God ‘shows up’ and how faithful God is. He also knows such work requires great perseverance and prayer and wisdom. Please pray for him, the students at UTSA and for the needs listed. Your prayers are greatly appreciated.

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

I [Wayne Dillen, Texas State University] spoke to a young lady at our luncheon whom I had not yet seen this semester. She was involved in freshmen ministry last year and did not make it back to a BSM event until the fourth week of school this fall. She introduced me to a young man with her. They did not know one another well, but had been in classes together in the past and she bumped into him on campus that morning and invited him to the BSM luncheon. Jeff Latham, pastor of Westover Baptist Church, was our speaker that day. After sharing with the students from the stage, he went over and sat down at a table with some students, including these. As Jeff asked questions, the young man opened up to him and shared that he had been considering taking his own life and felt no one cared about he. He was surprised and encouraged when the young lady asked him to come to the lunch. Jeff’s conversation with him focused on the true forgiveness that only God can give. He accepted Christ into his life. Jeff, myself, and two of our male small group leaders exchanged numbers with him and are following up with him in his new found faith.

Pause & Pray

This is an invitation to pray, a call to pray, and a plea to pray…would you be willing to Pause & Pray every Thursday for Texas campuses, students, and BSM staff?

At Stephen F. Austin State University the Baptist Student Ministry and area churches came together several years ago and started an on-campus worship service called 24/7.  Every Thursday night students gather in Kennedy Auditorium to hear a message about Jesus Christ and also worship Him through song.

This semester started as any other semester had, but the SFA BSM staff has seen God expand the 24/7 ministry.

“The last two weeks have been amazing [at 24/7]. The Kennedy auditorium fits roughly around 450 people and has been filled up the last two weeks. It has simply been amazing to see Lord bless the campus and for the students to come and worship together on campus.”  – Oscar

“Several people made decisions for Christ at our first on campus worship service. I’ve honestly never seen that happen. I’m really excited because to me, that affirms that God is DEFINITELY already working in the hearts of students at SFA.”  – Julianna

“24/7 lately has been packed with students who are hearing amazing messages. I know the Lord is moving on our campus.”  – Veronica

“Usually at this point in the semester we see the numbers of our weekly meeting [24/7] go down a little bit, but the Lord is continuing to show us how he is faithful when we are not. This semester has been centered on who is Christ, and the students are really responding to who He is in their lives.”  – Gary

We have international students on our campus representing nations. China, Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, New Zealand, Italy, Mexico, Ethiopia
Our campus is unique because: SFA is one of the first universities in Texas to allow women to attend, our education program is extremely sought out, the nursing program is growing in both people and prestige, the forestry program is one of the top in the nation, consequently the urban areas have come to the Piney Woods trading concrete for trees, Internationals come here thinking the school is in the capital of Texas (Austin), when it was actually founded by Stephen F. (Austin), plus our lumberjack mascot could totally beat up your mascot. Basically we are the BEST!
One of the best ways we have found to connect with new students is: Our Welcome Week events, freshmen specific life groups, dorm trash takeout each week.
God is at work on our campus: There are a number of students like any other campus that are seeking answers. SFA BSM has been proactive in reaching out to these students and begun answering their questions as we walk alongside them while they investigate.
Our campus mascot is: The amazing, beefy, super strong, axe wielding LUMBERJACK!

Ways to Pray…

  • For the staff:  Endurance: The semester has started great , but the staff is getting weary as the semester begins to wind down.
  • For BSM leadership:  Boldness: They are starting to get excited about sharing their faith, but there is still a fear about being shut down.
  • For our campus:  First that the Holy Spirit would open up doors for us to talk with people. Second, students would be attentive to the Holy Spirit moving. And finally for lost students to see us as approachable.
